What is Food Fortification? Why Government Supports?

Greetings from Alliance Engineering Consultant !!!

Foreword

Globally, 2 billion people and nearly half of India’s population suffer from micronutrient malnutrition, with consequences that include acute anemia, cognitive delays weakened immunity and increased risk of birth defects.

Food Fortification is a low-cost solution, and there is significant global evidence of its effectiveness.

It is a scientifically-proven, simple, cost-effective and scalable intervention to address micronutrient malnutrition without changing people’s dietary habits.

Both the rich and the poor belonging to rural and urban areas, across social structures, suffer from micronutrient deficiencies. In October 2016, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) operationalised standards for fortification of five staples, namely Wheat Flour and Rice (with Iron, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid), Edible Oil and Milk (with Vitamin A and D), and Salt (with Iron in addition to Iodine) and released the +F logo as an identity of the fortified food. The public health implications of micronutrient malnutrition are potentially huge and are especially significant when it comes to designing strategies for the prevention and control of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, and diet-related chronic diseases.
